Matthias Spielkamp

Matthias Spielkamp is founder and executive director of AlgorithmWatch, a non-profit advocacy and research organisation focused on consequences of algorithmic decision making (ADM) on societies. He is co-founder and publisher of the online magazine iRights.info, which in 2006 received the Grimme Online Award, Germany’s premier award for online journalism. He testified before several committees of the German Bundestag, i.e. on AI and robotics. Matthias held fellowships at ZEIT-Stiftung (Bucerius Fellow), Stiftung Mercator (Mercator Fellow) and the American Council on Germany (McCloy Fellow). He serves on the governing board of the German section of Reporters Without Borders and the advisory councils of Stiftung Warentest and the Whistleblower Network as well as the steering committee of the German Internet Governance Forum (IGF-D). Matthias has co-authored and edited several books on Internet governance, journalism and copyright regulation and holds master’s degrees in Journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Philosophy from the Free University of Berlin. He has contributed to publications like MIT Technology Review and Die Zeit and he has been quoted by Engadget, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Wired and many others. In 2017 he was named one of 15 architects building the data-driven futureby Silicon Republic.
